Between stimulus and response there is a space. In that space is our power to choose our response. In our response lies our growth and our freedom. Victor Frankl’s timeless insight is especially true for team leaders, educators, and mentors.

When high-stakes demands collide, impulsive reactions create friction, misunderstandings, and unnecessary team stress. Practicing intentional breath pauses transforms reactive tension into deliberate, grounded leadership.

The 4-7-8 Centering Technique

Try this simple breathing exercise before entering a negotiation, team meeting, or challenging conversation:

  • Inhale through the nose quietly for 4 counts.
  • Hold your breath gently without straining for 7 counts.
  • Exhale completely through your mouth with a soft whoosh for 8 counts.

“The calmest person in the room always sets the emotional climate for everyone else.”

— Nikolai Afanasev

When you master your breath, you master your state of mind. Presence is the greatest gift you can offer your team.
